Houston, Texas - University of Houston junior All-American Rhian Clarke finished in second place in the women's pole vault and freshman Alex Winstel won the 1500-meter run at the Adidas Houston Invitational on UH's Tom Tellez Track Saturday afternoon.

Clarke was the top collegian in the pole vault with a mark of 12 feet, 7 1/2 inches as she finished behind Vala Flosadottir, who won the events with a vault of 13 feet, 2 1/2 inches.

Winstel won the 1500-meter run with a season-best time of 4:03.29 as he edged Nathan Flores of Stephen F. Austin, who was second in 4:04.22. Houston's Toartou Kargou was fourth with a time of 4:13.04.

Sophomore Conference USA champion Lauren Smith provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships when she finished second in the 100-meter hurdles with a season-best time of 13.53 seconds. Smith also was sixth in the 400-meter hurdles with a season-best time of 1:00.28.

Freshman Tim Whitaker won his section of the 400 meters with a season-best time of 48.99 seconds.

In addition to those performances by the Cougars, there were six new stadium records set at the meet. The first record was set by former UH All-American John Davis.

A native of Long Beach, Calif., Davis won the shot put with a record-setting toss of 65 feet, 5 inches in his first meet at UH since earning All-American honors at UH in the 1998 and 1999 season. He also won the discus with a thorw of 187 feet, 11 inches.

In addition, Carol Finsrud set an Master's 45 American and stadium records when she won the women's discus with a throw of 172 feet.

Texas A&M's Meshell Trotter broke her own stadium record in the women's hammer with a throw of 192 feet, 8 inches. Trotter previously set the former record of 185 feet, 8 inches at the Tom Tellez Invitational earlier this year.

Charles Austin won the men's high jump when he established a new the stadium record with a leap of 7 feet, 5 inches and Suzette Lee won the women's triple jump with a record-setting leap of 45 feet, 10 3/4 inches.

In addition to Smith, there were two other athletes who provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships. Southern Utah State's Maryann Schauerhamer won the 3,000-meter steeplechase and set a new stadium record with a time of 10:33.25. It was nearly 14 seconds faster than her previous career-best time in the event.

Sam Houston States' Precious Madison also won the women's long jump with a provisional qualifying leap of 20 feet, 4 1/4 inches.
